The benefits from separating the ballast from the fixture and mounting it remotely on the pole, within reach of a ladder are numerous. Maintenance of critical electrical components, such as ballasts, capacitors and fuses, can be performed from the safety of an extension ladder.
Problems include heat gain in the enclosure by mounting multiple ballasts and noise. Many modern systems do not take into account this heat gain, which promotes ballast failure. Common remote systems mount the ballast directly to the cabinet walls to dissipate heat causing the remote enclosure to be noisy from ballast vibration.
